That switch controls the water heater. The water heater has electronic ignition, so it should be as simple as flipping the switch and waiting for it to start.
The red light by the switch will turn on when the water heater is trying to light; after it lights successfully it will turn off. You'll see it blink on then back off every now and then as the water heater needs to relight to maintain the water temperature.
If you are running off battery and your battery is low, or if there's a problem with the electronic ignition system, you may have to light the water heater manually (don't worry - it has a pilot so you only have to do it once when you set up).
