I also have a storage box, but also had a hitch installed on the front of the van-- no clearance issues whatsoever-- I use the back hitch for a bike rack

After all the great input from the folks on this forum, I thought I'd give repairing the generator one last shot.
I took it in to a local onan authorized repair shop. They said they had a replacement carburetor but it turned out the part they had was not the one they needed. They were however able to obtain the correct replacement carburetor from a local cummins parts dealer. After installing it, the generator started right up and runs very smoothly. So I'm glad I gave it one last shot.
Cost of the carburetor was $275, seems a little high. Cost of installation was another $200.
